Getting Back to Basics
The ongoing technology revolution, new business practices, and increased global trade have contributed to dramatic changes in the American economy. Education experts estimate that as many as half of recent high school graduates leave school without the skills they need to succeed in the workforce or in higher education. This is not because U.S. educational quality has declined, they state, but because economic changes are outpacing schools' abilities to update their curriculums. This issue of Keying In examines the three basic skill groups that students need to master in order to succeed in the high performance workplace of the 21st century:
